1878-1967. English poet and novelist. Early volumes of poetry such as Salt Water Ballads 1902 were followed by The Everlasting Mercy 1911, a long verse narrative characterized by its forcefully colloquial language, and Reynard the Fox 1919. His other works include the novel Sard Harker 1924, the critical work Badon Parchments 1947, the children's book The Box of Delights 1935, and plays. He was poet laureate from 1930.
