1789-1854. British Romantic painter of
grandiose landscapes and ambitious religious
subjects, such as Belshazzar's Feast (several
versions). Other examples of his work are The
Great Day of His Wrath and The Plains of
Heaven 1851-53 (both Tate Gallery, London).
Martin often made mezzotints (types of
engraving) from his work.
