fiction. Her first detective novel A Man Lay
Dead 1934 introduced her protagonist Chief
Inspector Roderick Alleyn. Originally an
actress, and later a theatre producer, she
went to England in 1928 and worked as an
interior decorator. Created Dame Commander of
the Order of the British Empire 1966.
