politician, born near Arpinum. He was elected
consul seven times, the first time in 107 BC.
He defeated the Cimbri and the Teutons
(Germanic tribes attacking Gaul and Italy)
102-101 BC. Marius tried to deprive Sulla of
the command in the East against Mithridates
and, as a result, civil war broke out in 88
BC. Sulla marched on Rome, and Marius fled to
Africa, but later Cinna held Rome for Marius
and together they created a reign of terror
in Rome.
