Queen of Scotland, the granddaughter of King
Edmund Ironside of England. She went to
Scotland after the Norman Conquest, and soon
after married Malcolm III. The marriage of
her daughter Matilda to Henry I united the
Norman and English royal houses. Through her
influence, the Lowlands, until then purely
Celtic, became largely anglicized. She was
canonized 1251 in recognition of her
benefactions to the church.
