490 BC. Fought between the Greeks, who were
ultimately victorious, and invading Persians
on the plain of Marathon, NE of Athens.
Before the battle, news of the Persian
destruction of the Greek city of Eretria was
taken from Athens to Sparta by a courier,
Pheidippides, who fell dead on arrival. His
feat is commemorated by the marathon race.
