wide attention with his novel of World War II
The Naked and the Dead 1948. A commentator on
the US social, literary, and political scene,
he has run for mayor of New York City and has
expressed radical sexual views. His other
novels include An American Dream 1964, Genius
and Lust 1976, Ancient Evenings 1983, and
Tough Guys Don't Dance 1984. His journalistic
work includes Armies of the Night 1968, about
protest against the Vietnam War, and The
Executioner's Song 1979 (Pulitzer Prize),
about a convicted murderer on Death Row.
Mailer has also ventured into filmmaking.
