1936- . Scottish centrist politician. Member
of Parliament for Caithness and Sutherland
from 1966. He left the Labour Party for the
Social Democrats (SDP) 1981, and was SDP
leader in 1988 during merger negotiations
with the Liberals. He then became a member of
the new Social and Liberal Democrats.
MacLennan was educated in Scotland, England,
and the USA, and called to the English Bar in
1962. When David Owen resigned the SDP
leadership in 1988, MacLennan took over until
the merger with the Liberal Party had been
completed. He took a leading part in the
negotiations.
