travels in the USSR and Central Asia inspired
his Eastern Approaches 1949 and A Person from
England 1958. His other books include To the
Back of Beyond 1974, Holy Russia 1979, and
Bonnie Prince Charlie 1988. During 1943-45 he
commanded a unit giving aid to partisans in
Yugoslavia.
