1883-1972. Scottish author. His parents were
actors. He was educated at Oxford University
and published his first novel The Passionate
Elopement in 1911. Later works were Carnival
1912, Sinister Street 1913-14 (an
autobiographical novel), and the comic Whisky
Galore 1947. He published his autobiography
in ten `octaves' (volumes) 1963-71.
