1887-1914. German Expressionist painter, a
founding member of the Blaue Reiter group in
Munich. With Franz Marc he developed a
semi-abstract style comprising Cubist and
Fauve characteristics. He was killed in World
War I. Macke visited Paris in 1907. In 1909
he met Marc, and together they went to Paris
1912, where they encountered the abstract
style of Robert Delaunay. In 1914 Macke
visited Tunis with Paul Klee, and was
inspired to paint a series of brightly
coloured watercolours largely composed of
geometrical shapes but still
representational.
