1901-1988. US composer of musicals, born in
Berlin. Son of an operatic tenor, he studied
under Busoni, and in 1924 went with his
father to the US. In 1942 he joined forces
with the lyricist Alan Jay Lerner (1918-86),
and their joint successes include Brigadoon
1947, Paint Your Wagon 1951, My Fair Lady
1956, Gigi 1958, and Camelot 1960.
