1879-1939. Australian politician, founder of
the United Australia Party 1931, prime
minister 1931-39. He was born in Tasmania and
first elected to parliament in 1929. His wife
Enid Lyons (1897-) was the first woman member
of the House of Representatives and of the
federal cabinet.
