Capital and industrial city of Lvov region in
the Ukrainian Republic, USSR; population
(1987) 767,000. Industries include textiles,
metals, and engineering. The university was
founded 1661. It was formerly a trade centre
on the Black Sea-Baltic route. Lvov, founded
in the 13th century by a Galician prince (the
name means city of Leo or Lev), was Polish
1340-1772, Austrian 1772-1919, Polish
1919-39, and annexed by the USSR 1945. It was
the site of violent nationalist
demonstrations in Oct 1989.
