1867-1933. US painter and graphic artist, a
member of the Ashcan School. Born in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania, he studied at the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and
worked as an illustrator and cartoonist
1894-96 for various newspapers. Robert Henri
convinced him to take up painting. Luks,
painting captured the excitement and colour
of life in New York City's slums.
