1913- . British radio astronomer, director
(until 1981) of Jodrell Bank Experimental
Station (now Nuffield radio astronomy
laboratories). During World War II he worked
at the Telecommunications Research
establishment (1939-45), and in 1951 became
professor of radio astronomy at the
University of Manchester. His books include
Radio Astronomy 1951 and The Exploration of
Outer Space 1961.
