1913-1964. US actor whose first leading role,
as the professional killer in This Gun for
Hire 1942, made him a star. His career
declined after the mid-1950s although his
last role, in The Carpetbaggers 1964, was one
of his best. His other films include The Blue
Dahlia 1946 and Shane 1953.
