1899-1986. US biochemist. He investigated the
means by which the cell acquires energy and
highlighted the crucial role played by the
energy rich phosphate molecule, adenosine
triphosphate (ATP). For this and further work
on metabolism, Lipmann shared the 1953 Nobel
Prize for Medicine with Hans Krebs.
