1920- . Soviet politician. He joined the
Communist Party 1944, and became a member of
the Politburo 1985. He was replaced as the
party ideologist 1988 by Vadim Medvedev.
Ligachev was regarded as the chief
conservative ideologist, and the leader of
conservative opposition to President
Gorbachev.
