1885-1962. French painter, art teacher, and
critic. He opened the Academie Montparnasse
1922 and founded a South American branch of
the school in Rio de Janeiro 1952. He also
wrote treatises on landscape painting and
figure painting. His own paintings are
complicated compositions of geometrical forms
painted in pure colours, for example Rugby
(Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris).
