Loch in Tayside region, Scotland; area 16 sq
km/6 sq mi. It is drained by the river Leven,
and has seven islands; Mary Queen of Scots
was imprisoned 1567-68 on Castle Island. A
national nature reserve since 1964. Leven is
also the name of a sea loch in Strathclyde,
Scotland.
