Capital of Lerida province, N Spain, on the
river Segre; 132 km/82 mi west of Barcelona;
population (1986) 112,000. Industries include
leather, paper, glass, and cloth. Lerida was
captured by Caesar 49 bc. It has a palace of
the kings of Aragon.
