1692-1730. French actress. She performed at
the Comedie Francaise national theatre, where
she first appeared 1717. Her many admirers
included the philosopher Voltaire and the
army officer Maurice de Saxe; a rival
mistress of the latter, the Duchesse de
Bouillon, is thought to have poisoned her.
