1932- . British Conservative politician. A
former financial journalist, he was financial
secretary to the Treasury 1979-81, secretary
of state for energy 1981-83, and chancellor
of the Exchequer 1983. He resigned in 1989
after criticism of his policy of British
membership of the European Monetary System by
government adviser Alan Walters.
