1769-1830. British painter, the leading
portraitist of his day. He became painter to
George III in 1792 and president of the Royal
Academy 1820. In addition to British royalty,
he painted a series of European sovereigns
and dignitaries, including pope Pius VIII
(Waterloo Chamber, Windsor Castle, Berkshire)
commissioned after the Allied victory at
Waterloo.
