1858-1923. British Conservative politician, born in New Brunswick, Canada. He made a fortune in Scotland as a banker and iron-merchant, and entered Parliament 1900. Elected leader of the opposition 1911, he became colonial secretary in Asquith's coalition government 1915-16, chancellor of the Exchequer 1916-19, and Lord Privy Seal 1919-21 in Lloyd George's coalition. He formed a Conservative Cabinet 1922, but resigned on health grounds.
