1942- . New Zealand Labour Party prime minister 1983-89. Lange, a barrister, was elected to the House of Representatives in 1977. Labour had a decisive win in the 1984 general election on a non-nuclear military policy, which Lange immediately put into effect, despite criticism from the USA. He introduced a free-market economic policy and was re-elected 1987. He resigned Aug 1989 over a disagreement with his finance minister.
