An official body set up 1925 to register
legal rights to land in England and Wales.
There has been a gradual introduction, since
1925, of compulsory registration of land in
different areas of the country. This requires
the purchaser of land to register details of
his or her title and all other rights (such
as mortgages and easements) relating to the
land. Once registered, the title to the land
is guaranteed by the Land Registry. This
makes buying and selling of land easier and
cheaper.
