1896-1987. Japanese politician and prime
minister 1957-60. A government minister
during World War II and imprisoned 1945, he
was never put on trial and returned to
politics 1953. During his premiership, Japan
began a substantial rearmament programme and
signed a new treaty with the USA that gave
greater equality in the relationship between
the two states.
