1942- . British Labour politician, party leader from 1983. Born and educated in Wales, he was elected to represent a Welsh constituency in Parliament 1970 (Islwyn from 1983). He was further left than prime ministers Wilson and Callaghan, but as party leader (in succession to Michael Foot) adopted a moderate position, initiating a major policy review 1988-89. He initiated the expulsion of the left-wing Militant Tendency members from the Labour Party 1986. He is a good speaker.
