1910-1976. German conductor. Renowned for the
clarity and fidelity of his interpretations
of the works of Richard Strauss and Wagner's
Ring cycle, he conducted Britain's Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra 1961-75 and was
musical director of the Munich Philharmonic
from 1967.
