1908-1989. Austrian conductor. He was
conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra 1955-89. He directed the Salzburg
Festival from 1964 and became director of the
Vienna State Opera in 1976. He is associated
with the Classical and Romantic repertoire -
Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, and Richard
Strauss.
