1619-1693. Dutch painter, active in Amsterdam
from 1653. He specialized in still lifes set
off against a dark background. These feature
arrangements of glassware, polished
metalwork, decorated porcelain, and fine
carpets, with the occasional half-peeled
lemon (a Dutch still-life motif).
