1929- . Czech writer, born in Brno. His first
novel The Joke 1967 brought him into official
disfavour in Prague, and, unable to publish
further works, he moved to France. His novels
include The Book of Laughter and Forgetting
1979 and The Unbearable Lightness of Being
1984.
