1879-1940. Swiss painter. He settled in Munich 1906, joined the Blaue Reiter group 1912, and worked at the Bauhaus school of art and design 1920-31, returning to Switzerland 1933. His style in the 1920s and 1930s was dominated by humorous linear fantasies. Klee travelled with the painter August Macke to Tunisia in 1914, a trip that transformed his sense of colour. The Klee Foundation, Berne, has a large collection of his work. His publications include On Modern Art 1948.
