1853-1917. British colonial administrator. In
South Africa, early in 1896, he led the
Jameson Raid from Mafeking into Transvaal to
support the non-Boer colonists there, in an
attempt to overthrow the government, for
which he served some months in prison.
Returning to South Africa, he succeeded Cecil
Rhodes as leader of the Progressive Party of
Cape Colony, where he was prime minister
