Small island, 41 sq km/16 sq mi, in the
Strait of Hormuz, belonging to Iran. It is
strategically important because oil tankers
leaving the Persian Gulf for Japan and the
West have to pass through the strait to reach
the Arabian Sea. It was occupied by the
Portuguese 1515-1622.
