1758-1810. English portrait painter, a
follower of Joshua Reynolds and rival to
Thomas Lawrence. He became portrait painter
to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in
1789 and a Royal Academician in 1795. Among
his paintings are portraits of the royal
princesses, William Pitt, Lord Grenville,
Rodney, and Nelson.
