1590-1656. Dutch painter who used extremes of
light and shade, influenced by Caravaggio;
with Terbrugghen he formed the Utrecht
school. Around 1610-12 he was in Rome,
studying Caravaggio. Later he visited
England, painting Charles I 1628 (National
Portrait Gallery, London) and became court
painter in The Hague.
