1824-1877. German botanist. He studied plant
development and determined how a plant
embryo, lying within a seed, is itself formed
out of a single fertilized egg (ovule).
Hofmeister also discovered that mosses and
ferns display an alternation of generations,
in which the plant has two forms,
spore-forming and gamete-forming.
