1880-1966. German-born Abstract Expressionist painter, active in Paris and Munich from 1915 until 1932, when he moved to the USA. In addition to bold brushwork (he experimented with dribbling and dripping painting techniques in the 1940s) he used strong expressive colours. In the 1960s he moved towards a hard-edged abstract style. He opened two art schools, in New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts, and was influential among New York artists in the 1930s.
