1900-1954. English novelist. He settled in
Hollywood as one of its most successful
scriptwriters of, for example, Mrs Miniver.
His books include Lost Horizon 1933,
envisaging Shangri-la, a remote district of
Tibet where time stands still; Goodbye, Mr
Chips 1934, a portrait of an old
schoolmaster; and Random Harvest 1941.
