c. 1547-1619. English miniaturist and
goldsmith, court artist to Elizabeth I from
about 1579. His sitters included the
explorers Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. A
fine collection of his delicate portraits,
set in gold cases, including Young Man Amid
Roses about 1590, is in the Victoria and
Albert Museum, London.
