1919- . New Zealand mountaineer. In 1953,
with Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing
Norgay, he reached the summit of Mount
Everest, the world's highest peak. As a
member of the Commonwealth Transantarctic
Expedition 1957-58, he was the first person
since Scott to reach the South Pole overland,
on 3 Jan 1958. He was in the reconnaissance
party to Everest in 1951. On the way to the
South Pole he laid depots for Fuchs's
completion of the crossing of the continent.
