1593-1633. English poet. His volume of
religious poems, The Temple, appeared in
1633, shortly before his death. His poems
depict his intense religious feelings in
clear, simple language. He became orator to
Cambridge University 1619, and a prebendary
in Huntingdonshire 1625. After ordination in
1630 he became vicar of Bemerton, Wiltshire,
and died of consumption.
