1903-1975. English sculptor. She developed a
distinctive abstract style, creating hollowed
forms of stone or wood with spaces bridged by
wires or strings; many later works are in
bronze. She worked in concrete, bronze, wood,
and aluminium, but her preferred medium was
stone. She married first the sculptor John
Skeaping and second the painter Ben
Nicholson. Under Nicholson's influence she
became more interested in abstract form. In
1939 she moved to St Ives, Cornwall (where
her studio is now a museum). She was created
a Dame of the British Empire 1965.
