1926- . German composer whose large and
varied output includes orchestral, vocal, and
chamber music. He uses traditional symphony
and concerto forms, and incorporates a wide
range of styles including jazz. In 1953 he
moved to Italy where his music became more
expansive, as in the opera The Bassarids
1966.
