1863-1935. British Labour politician, born in
Glasgow. He worked for 20 years as an
iron-moulder in Newcastle, entered Parliament
1903, and contributed to Labour's political
organization. He was home secretary in the
first Labour government, and was foreign
secretary 1929-31, when he accorded the
Soviet government full recognition. Nobel
Peace Prize 1934.
