1913- . US director of the Central
Intelligence Agency 1966-73, when he was
dismissed by President Nixon. In 1977 he was
convicted of lying before a congressional
committee because his oath as chief of
intelligence compelled him to keep secrets
from the public. He was originally with the
Office of Strategic Services.
