1888-1949. British comedy actor. Originally a
music hall comedian, from the 1930s he made
many films in which he usually played
incompetents in positions of authority,
including Good Morning Boys 1937; Oh Mr
Porter 1938; Ask a Policeman 1939; The Ghost
of St Michaels 1941; My Learned Friend 1944.
